Is "Vibe Coding" a Real Skill or Just a Meme?

Why I'm Asking This
"Vibe coding" started as a half-joking term for a very specific feeling: describing what you want in plain English, letting an AI generate the code, and just going with whatever "feels right" without deeply understanding every line. It quickly turned into a meme — the punchline being someone shipping broken, insecure code because they never actually read what the AI wrote.
But the more this term stuck around, the more I noticed something: a lot of people mocking it are also, quietly, doing some version of it themselves. So I wanted to actually think through whether there's a real skill hiding inside the joke, or whether it's just a funny way to describe bad practice.
The Case For "It's Just a Meme"
The mockery isn't coming from nowhere. There are real, valid criticisms:
- It normalizes not understanding your own code. If you can't explain why a piece of code works, you can't debug it when it breaks, can't judge if it's secure, and can't extend it confidently later.
- It produces fragile results at scale. A vibe-coded prototype might work great in a demo and then completely fall apart the moment real users, real edge cases, or real load hit it — because nobody actually reasoned through the failure modes.
- It's often just "hope-driven development." Generate code, run it, if it works ship it, if it breaks ask the AI to fix it, repeat — with no real understanding of why something failed or succeeded in between.
- Security and correctness get skipped entirely. Subtle bugs, injection vulnerabilities, race conditions — these aren't things you catch by "vibing." They require deliberate, careful review that pure vibe coding tends to skip.
If "vibe coding" just means "generate code and don't read it," then yeah, that's not a skill — that's a shortcut with a cute name, and the criticism is fair.
The Case For "It's a Real Skill"
But I think the more interesting version of vibe coding — the one worth taking seriously — isn't "don't understand anything." It's something closer to fast, iterative, AI-assisted prototyping, and that actually does require skill:
- Knowing what to describe, and how, is a skill. Getting an AI to generate genuinely useful code requires clearly specifying requirements, edge cases, and constraints — which is closer to writing a good spec than "just vibing."
- Fast judgment of AI output is a skill. Being able to glance at generated code and quickly sense "this looks wrong" or "this is missing an edge case" without reading every line character-by-character is a real, trainable form of pattern recognition — built from actual coding experience, not despite it.
- Knowing when to slow down is a skill. The best "vibe coders" I've seen aren't reckless — they move fast on low-stakes, easily reversible code, and switch into careful, deliberate mode the moment something touches security, payments, or production data. Knowing which mode you're in is the actual skill.
- It's a real productivity multiplier when paired with real understanding. For an experienced developer, describing intent and quickly validating AI output is genuinely faster than typing every line manually — the same way autocomplete or code snippets sped things up without being "cheating."
Why the Term Gets a Bad Reputation
I think the confusion comes from two very different groups doing the "same thing" for very different reasons:
- Experienced developers using AI to move fast on things they could write themselves, while still reviewing and understanding the output critically.
- Complete beginners using AI to produce things they have no ability to evaluate, debug, or secure — because they skipped the fundamentals entirely and went straight to prompting.
Both get called "vibe coding." Only one of them is actually a skill. The other is just skipping the learning process and hoping it works out.
Where I Actually Land
My honest take: vibe coding isn't inherently good or bad — it's a spectrum, and where you land on it depends entirely on whether you have the underlying fundamentals to judge what you're accepting. For someone who already understands how to code, vibe coding is a legitimate, fast way to prototype, and being good at it — fast prompting, fast pattern-recognition on AI output, fast judgment on when to slow down — is a real, learnable skill.
For someone who doesn't have those fundamentals yet, it's not really "vibe coding" in the productive sense — it's more like gambling with code you can't evaluate, and calling it a skill just gives it a more flattering name than it deserves.
What This Means If You're Learning to Code Right Now
If you're a beginner, I'd be careful about leaning on vibe coding before you've built the fundamentals to actually judge AI output. Use AI to speed up things you already understand, not to skip understanding entirely. The skill of "vibing" well is built on top of real coding knowledge — it doesn't replace the need to build that knowledge in the first place.
